I used Wellbutrin to quit smoking after smoking for fourteen years, because I got a
sinus infection that wouldn't go away. I was 28 years old, and I couldn't shake a simple infection. I talked to my doctor
about how to quit, and what the best method for me would be.
We decided to try a combination of Wellbutrin and the patch. I was told to start Wellbutrin, and set a date for
ten to fourteen days after I started taking it, and start the patch on my quit date. My doctor told me that a lot of people
find that Wellbutrin actually takes enjoyment out of smoking. I set my quit date for two weeks after I started my
prescription, but after eight days, I found I was unable to finish a cigarette, because it tasted terrible.
After the patch, I did continue smoking here and there, but only at
the rate of one cigarette per day, total. After three or four days on the patch, I didn't smoke at all. You have to be really
ready, without any doubts. I knew in my head and heart that I wanted to be done, so I was. I needed help, because there was no
way I could do it cold turkey. I knew myself well enough to know that I couldn't do it completely on my own.
Another piece of advice is to give yourself no excuses. People were
surprised that I was quitting, even though I lived with a smoker. Many people use that as an excuse, saying there is no way they
can quit when the person they live with still smokes. I didn't even ask him to try to quit, because that had no bearing on my
success. Also, make cigarettes available to you. I know I would reach panic mode if I knew that I couldn't have a cigarette.
Knowing they were there and that I chose not to smoke them made me relax a little bit at times.
